Mothers, Fathers

Punakha is famed for its Dzong or castle. It is massive and beautiful, strategically located at the union of the Mother and Father rivers, accessed from a cantilevered bridge over the Mother. Wide stone steps lead steeply up to a portico sheltering 2 massive golden prayer...

The Queen Mother and monks in passing

Some monks in orange prison garb wander by. Wait, that’s not right. (Their robes are actually a gorgeous orange). We’ve been sitting in the airport for a while now, waiting for the plane to Bumthang, only to find out that that it’s cancelled, probably for the next few days. We had lunch...

Final Bhutan highlights

Flying into Bhutan from our stopover in Kathmandu, Nepal, our airplane passed right next to Mt. Everest, which was just about as high off the ground as we were at 30,000 feet! It is absolutely marvelous to see the world's highest point rising out of the clouds from above. The cumulous display...

Bhutan

The two best words I can use to describe Bhutan would be "rarefied" and "idyllic". I was drawn to Bhutan largely because of their unique metric for economic activity (called Gross National Happiness), their status as the world's newest democracy (first ever national election held in 2008), and...

Day 11

Our final day in Bhutan started with another drive -- this one back to Paro. We made the road opening and stopped for sausages at Chuzzom before heading to our last major destination -- Tiger's Nest Monastery. We opted for the easy way up, being on horseback for about 3/4 of the way, and were...

Day 10

Another day of retracing our steps and chance experiences. We started with a quick stop at the information building of the black neck crane which migrates through the valley before heading back to Thimphu. Passed a family of monkeys -- macaques -- along the way. This time we did stop at...

Day 10 (Continued)

We took more note of our route back the Thimphu this time, stopping to really look at the water prayer wheels, tatas, and flora that we passed along the way. The evening finished fabulously, with a delightful dinner at Palden's home, with Ellery and I both dressed in our Bhutanese finery.

Day 9

In the morning, Dorji surprised Ellery with a handmade bow and arrow and she spent much of the morning practicing with her little monk friend before we left Jakar.

Day 9 (Continued)

A long day of driving, beginning with a stop at the Swiss hotel to buy some cheese which Ellery pronounced as wonderful and then much retracing of steps. We stopped again at the weavers at Chhume where Palden selected many items to sell in Thimphu. We crossed Kiki La and Yo Tang La before...

Day 8 (Continued)

Returning to the hotel, I took a short hike to a very small village above the hotel, passing many children also wanting their photos taken. Palden looked through our purchases from Thimphu -- clearly from the look on his face, I overpaid for the dagger but probably got my money's worth for the...
