Bacolod

Bacolod, Philippines

Bacolod is one of the most interesting destination spots in Visayas. The city is the capital of Negros Occidental, and is best known for the Maskara Festival which is celebrated in the month of October. The Maskara Festival is the local version of the Mardi Gras, which showcases masked dancers, carnivals, food and drinks.

Going to Bacolod is very convenient as well. If you are going to take a boat, it will take approximately 18 hours from Manila. Bacolod is the place to be for seafood lovers. Fresh oysters are a great delicacy in this city. Of course, never leave Bacolod without tasting the city's number one dish, which is Chicken Inasal. Do not worry about getting lost in this big city because there are only two main roads with the others along those roads. Bacolod is also known for its old unpainted houses, fresh fruit stores, scenic mountain views, and very friendly people.

Libya

Tripoli, Libya

If you are looking for a different travel destination, why not try Libya? Libya is a country in North Africa which borders the Mediterranean Sea to the north, Egypt to the east, Sudan to the southeast, and Chad and Niger to the south. It is the fourth largest country in Africa which has a population of 5.7 million people.

Food is great in Libya. It is a blend of Arabic and Mediterranean cuisine. Couscous is a famous local dish which consists of boiled cereal used as a base for meat and potatoes. The meat is usually mutton. In some cases, chicken is also used. Libya has also great and fun nightlife with numerous clubs, bars, restaurants, and live music bands. The people are also adventurous and full of energy. Since Libya is mostly a desert country with extremely hot conditions, the best time to visit Libya is between November and March when daytime temperatures are normally cool.

Majestic Ifugao

Banaue, Philippines

Majestic best describes the northern Philippines province of Ifugao. The famous province is a long drive north from Manila. After passing San Jose, the journey gets more exciting as the route follows the wide Pamapanga River Valley. It rises over the astonishing Dalton Pass, which is 3000 feet high, and descends into the Cagayan Valley heading into the Cordillera mountains.

One of the highlights of Ifugao are the Banaue Rice Terraces, which are vast, interconnected strips of rice terraces, which are recognized as one of the 5 beautiful sites in the Philippines. Because of its enormous beauty, the governor of Ifugao has made the preservation of this site the highest priority. The people, dialect, and the province are termed Ifugao which means People of the Earth. The people of Ifugao are known to be an independent agricultural society. For the Ifugao, their culture revolves around the rice, which is considered a prestige crop.

World Heritage Sites in the Philippines

Manila, Philippines

The UNESCO World Heritage Center has chosen 5 magnificent sites in the Philippines that are world class. They have chosen four baroque churches scattered in the archipelago, the Banaue Rice Terraces, Vigan, Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park, and the Tubbataha Reef Marine Park.

The first site are acutally the only four baroque churches in the country, which are the Santa Maria Church in Ilocos Sur, Paoay Church in Ilocos Norte, San Agustin Church in Manila, and Santo Tomas Villanueva in Iloilo. These four churches are architectural wonders mixing Baroque and Filipino details. The Banaue Rice Terraces in the Ifugao mountains are beautiful 2000-year old terraces carved by the ancestors of the Batad indigenous people. Vigan is known for its cobblestone streets and beautiful colonial European architecture. The Puerto Prinsesa Subterranean River National Park is a stunning limestone karst landscape with a beautiful underground river. Lastly, the Tubbataha Reef Marine Park is a dazzling and enormous reef of marine sanctuary that is nominated at the New 7 Wonders of Nature.

Intramuros, Malate, and Baywalk

Manila, Philippines

Manila is know for its beautiful cities, delighful malls, and exciting nightlife. For those who would want to experience a more adventurous time, I suggest to visit the culture rich places that are sometimes forgotten by the typical city dweller. One of the best places to visit are the Intramuros, Baywalk, and Malate areas.

If you want to have a great time in the city, you have to visit Intramuros, which is the “Walled City”. It was built during the Spanish regime, and still looks beautiful. The cobblestone streets which were once trudged by the Spaniards, are windows to beautiful Spanish architecture. Also, go to Malate and visit two of the oldest churches in Manila, which are the Manila Cathedral and the San Agustin Church. Experience a breezy afternoon at the Baywalk, which is a long strip of walkway on Roxas Boulevard. You can watch the beautiful Manila sunset at Manila Bay.

Mines View Park

Baguio, Philippines

One of the most popular and most visited spots in Baguio City is Mines View Park. It is the most visited park in the city which lays on a gentle slope that overlooks Benguet's gold and copper mines The park has a wide observation deck where you can experience a panoramic view of the surrounding mountains.

Minesview park is usually the next stop after visiting the Mansion and Wright Park. Once you enter the park, you will pass winding stone-covered pathway that slopes downward leading to the observation deck. There are also rock benches that lay along the pathway where you can simply rest and enjoy the view. I recommend that you visit the park in the morning because fog starts to move in during the afternoon, which obstructs the view. Of course, there is a wide assortment of “pasalubong” or gifts that make Minesview Park an enjoyable place.

Camp John Hay

Baguio, Philippines

Camp John Hay used to be the Rest and Recreation center of the United States Army personnel in the Philippines. Because of its cool climate, the area was suitable and ideal for the American army. Today, Camp John Hay is a beautiful vacation spot in Baguio City. It is the resort of the mountains.

The moment you enter Camp John Hay, you will be astonished by its beauty. You will notice a large bentgreen grass-filled golf course within the camp that is designed by Jack Niclaus, which is accessible to members and nonmembers alike. It is also great to cruise the pine tree-lined roads while feeling the cool breeze and viewing the beautiful landscape. Camp John Hay also has great hotels such as The Manor Hotel, a shopping center, and a convention center. Although the camp has changed over time, it still remains a wonderful and relaxing place for everyone.
