Back through the US!

OK folks...for those of you who've been paying attention, anyway, I drove home through the states....went from Dingwall, Nova Scotia down through Sydney, then over to New Brunswick (stayed in Frederickton), and then on through Quebec, and Ontario...yes, drove the 401 through Toronto (no sweat), and down to Niagara Falls, and into New York. Phew. Then drove across and thru Pennsilvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois (Chicago during the morning rush-hour, that was truly a rush!)...and then on up north and west thru Wisconsin, North Dakota, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta. Wow! Am amazed. My whole trip lasted about 8 weeks. I'd recommend it to anyone. Have posted some new pics. Next trip? hmmm, was considering Thailand. We'll see......

It's Blueberry season...

yup, I went out with Satoko yesterday and picked about 8 lbs of wild organic blueberries. Yum. Sharing them with the Markland folk. I've been busier out here, and becoming quite attached to some of the people too. Survived a windy, rainy storm last week, alas, no pictures of it. Posted some more pictures today, but some were unable to get uploaded, so will have to try again later, or show people when I get home...
umm, what else? -been collecting some stones, and have done a hike at least every other day. Oh, and the Persiod Meteor Shower was nice on sunday night. The sky was perfectly clear, I was on the beach until after midnight and saw several meteors. Another lovely event, I went to a concert by Chris Norman and David Greenberg. Baroque flute and violin in the first half, then some traditional celtic stuff, also really great. Taped by CBC(2), the concert will be broadcast on one of the upcoming Canada Live shows. I highly recommend listening. Never ever have I heard violin like that...and the wooden flute playing was exquisite.

Today I met Gord, riding that fantastic bike (see pictures). The bike is called a Penny-Farthing...named so because of the large wheel (penny) and the small wheel...It was built in Coventry, England 130 years ago. Gord is riding the Cabot Trail on this bike, was taking a breather when I stopped to speak with him. Amazing guy. Can do this obviously because he's ridden most of his life...and despite by-pass surgery a year ago and sore knees, he's up for it. The bike has no gears, and the brake is just above the back wheel. To go down the mountains, he puts his chest onto the seat, and one foot on a wee ledge, while the other foot uses the brake. Yeah.

Lobster Dinner

Went to a dinner party at Ham's house last night. Ate with Satoko, Ham, Elizabeth, Joanna and John. Great dinner, wine, desert, lovely company. Everyone there had travelled quite a bit, hence some great conversation. Today it's hot and sunny. going to the swimming pool I think. oh yeah, one of those photos really does have a bald eagle in it..really. Meeting some great people. Going to another ceilidh tonight and on Sunday, a play: The Spirit of Aspy Bay, written by and performed by locals... mmm, am enjoying the pristine air, sea and the quiet. The only part of the Cabot Trail I haven't seen is in Baddeck, which I'm planning to visit next week. Also, will be back in Sydney for shopping and banking next week.

Gone Fishin'

Mmmm, fresh Mackerel (see Photo). about a dozen of us went out sunday morning, caught a total of about 400 of the fishes, jigging style. The fish are about 8 to 12 inches long, have a silvery body with a pretty blue design. Not too gruesome to catch and de-hook, usually. Charlie took Satuko and I out there, paid our admittance fee, and enjoyed the boat ride. We went from Bay St Lawrence north to Meat Cove and settled to fish. The weather was sunny and warm, the folk friendly as ever. Everyone was welcome to take home as many fishes as they wanted. I was the only one who wanted to though (the other fish will be sold for bait). All I had for transporting the critters was my rain poncho, which did a lovely job of it and washed out well afterward too, I must say. Chef Norman at the Markland gave me a refresher on cleaning the fish, then heated up his grill. yum. lemon juice, sea salt and pepper, and minutes later, the freshest fish I ever ate. Delicious. Right away. I don't recommend keeping it in the fridge too long, although there's a kitty cat nearby who enjoys it....

hmmm, there are some new photos for you folks to look at. Be sure to click on them for enlargement and description. Am having a quiet day. It's been sunny and hot...and my friend Pam has left to be with her family and plan her brother's funeral. He died two days ago. I've seen a few more animals, a bald eagle, some bats, and some fireflies each night. Also blue herons and sea birds... And, the night sky is fantastic. I'll be sure to hang out by the beach at night around Aug. 12th. the Persiod Meteor shower reaches it's peak then. The morning meditation was wonderful, I took a photo in about the middle of it...
so, things is quiet...

mmmmm, lobster....

yes, had a freshly steamed lobster for breakfast today, courtesy of the chef at the Markland. well, I DID bring him a bunch of wild strawberries yesterday... The weather is sunny and hot, and I'm in Ingonish today. I have had a very relaxing time here so far but will begin doing massage therapy in earnest this week. and maybe hiking too. All is lovely here. Not sure when I'll get a chance to post more photos, sometime mid-week perhaps. Went to a Ceiladh last night (gaelic for live music I think). Two talented brothers playing fiddle and piano. ummm, really well done, but the jigs and the riels and them other bits all blended... 'til I couldn't really distinguish them anymore...and I felt silly sitting on a chair throughout. seems that stuff was made for dancing. The history, scenery, people, etc etc are all wonderful.

listening to some local musicians sing, play, tell stories to the tourists in Cheticamp, Cape Breton. everything is so mellow here. weather cloudy and very, very windy, and quite warm out too. Said hello to a gorgeous female moose who was eating roadside on one of my drives. was fooling around with my camera (i`ve left the manual in Calgary, doh!), and «i accidentally re-formatted the memory card, hence all the photos i took. oh well, i`ll be here all summer, and won`t make that mistake again. The Cabot Trail is indeed very beautiful, «i[m enjoying all. oh yeah, for anyone who might benefit from knowing this, Roger`s Wireless has no coverage up here , but do in Sydney...So, ive had to buy a new phone for the summer.

in Sydney, Cape Breton!

Well, here I am at the lovely Sydney Harbour. The drive all through eastern Canada has been wonderful, and I'll be able to post some pics later today. Also, tonight I'll be staying at the Markland Resort, and will sometime this week go on a whale watching tour.
having a fantastic and spiritually productive time! weather is cloudy, coolish - my favorite. Have met up with Pam and she's wonderful. Ate scallops but no lobster yet. Maybe tonight.

Nova Scotia again...

Mmmm, crossed the Northumberland Strait by ferry (75 minutes), with a glorious 5 minute thunderstorm to begin with, then magnificent clouds and rainbow above the sea. Now in Pictou, Nova Scotia, the sun is shining again, just in time for me to set up camp. I think I may find some lobster to eat for my supper.Today the Lobster Carnival begins. Will be meeting up with Pam tomorrow in Sydney. Then up we go to Dingwall, Cape Breton Island.

Well, just crossed Confederation Bridge into PEI. Am at the tourist info centre, and time on the computer is limited. will attempt to get to a public library next week to post photos and stories. Was in Moncton yesterday, got sucked into spending $5. to experience the "Magnetic Hill" yes, and one of the teenagers running the site took a wee recording of it with my camera... also in Moncton, had to stop and take a picture of the Macdonald's sign, which said: The McLobster is Back! No, I didn't get one. Because I can imagine what they do to the poor things...
weather has been cloudy/sunny, and relatively cool. perfect driving weather.
today, I'll travel east on the #1 across PEI, visit Little Sands (where some ancestors settled), then ferry back across to Nova Scotia, and settle into a campground (the Provincial ones are the best, will write about the private one I stayed at in Limoges, Quebec, later)... Tomorro I'll be in Cape Breton!

Crossed the Continent!

well, left Calgary on sunday, am in New Brunswick today, Thursday night. Not much time or energy to write. The drive has been long. spent some time in Ottawa, and also the old part of Quebec City. will post photos later, this joint is closing soon. Weather cloudy and cool, so driving etc very comfortable. More writing tomorrow, from perhaps Frederickton.

getting ready

So, yeah, I've got the camera (now just have to learn how to use it). and I probably should buy some bug spray and oh yes, get some more maps I suppose. Might help. Really, I'm travelling alone and winging it for the most part. I've had very good travels and luck in the past with that philosophy. But, I've got three weeks before I head out, so I probably won't post again until I'm underway.... Going across Canada has been a desire for some years now. And having the opportunity to work a little in Cape Breton has meant it's happenin'! Yippee!!!

OK, I'll be back here on blogabond perhaps July 1/07- 5 am, a pre-take-off moment...
