The asphalt jungle

Phnom Penh, Cambodia

This city is absolutely insane!
No fixed prices, no public transport, no traffic rules, no order in street numbering, lots of people spending the whole day in their pyjamas (I mean, driving, hanging out, shopping... everything)... This city is a lovely chaos in every sense.
The most striking feature is no doubt the traffic...
OH MY, the first impression you get is 'I will never make it to other side of the street... alive'. Options like looking for a zebra crossing or waiting for a red light are useless, as nothing stops these crazy moto drivers from getting to their destinations, not even the other moto drivers. Every intersection is a matter of life and death. Surprisingly enough, they manage to avoid bumping into each other, but don't ask how... They use the horn every 3 seconds approximately, but how do they know who is warning who?
After 3 days we've discovered that they even manage to avoid running over pedestrians as well, so feeling brave enough we just walk through the middle of the street, eyes and fingers crossed, until we can feel the sidewalk under our feet again (well, sidewalk... there's no real sidewalk, just millions of cars, motorbikes and food stalls piled up at both sides of the road).
Our particular moto-taxi driver, whose name I could never remember, took us today to the Killing Fields 15 km outside the city... both in the same motorbike. Yeah, 3 or 4 or even 5 people in the same motorbike is kinda common as well.
Moto-taxi drivers are everywhere. I mean, there are dozens in every street, offering a ride to every single tourist. After a while you get used to them as well, and above all, we try to be nice all the time. They offer, you say no and smile, they smile back and say thanks anyway. It's an exercise of mutual understanding, we understand they have to try anyway, they understand we feel like killing ourselves after the 125,897th time we hear 'Motorbike, madam?'
As for the rest... We can just repeat what has been said a thousand times. People are amazing, the food is great, and we're enjoying and learning continuously. We have visited here the S-21 prison where victims of the Khmer Rouge genocide were taken for interrogation and torture, and the Killing Fields where they were taken to be killed in the most cruel and savage ways. Once again, witnessing the inhumanity of humanity becomes as painful as possible, understanding almost impossible. Just one more detail: the killers, who are responsible of 3 million deaths, thousands of women and children included, have never been in jail, not even had a trial, as they were protected and supported by the U.S. and the United Nations. Sweet politics.

Send a Compliment

Hey hey,
Back from rainy France, but how I see it, you girls should be careful about going to Vietnam these days. Bit of a flood... :-(
Still good to read your stories. Glad that long walks are compensated by beach massages ;-). And never let Frenchies help you out, you know how annoying they can be! :-P
Bring some smiles with you when you get back!
Un abrazo,
Linda
