Failed attempt to hire deaf ayi

Harbin, China

We have an ayi, but have seen this group of recyclers with a deaf woman. Last semester we gave them all of our recycling and they came up to the apartment to get them. The deaf woman was so sweet. After they came up, Chris thought maybe we should try to hire the woman after we got little guy to play with him. We thought why not give this lady a chance...we'd be home the whole time and maybe Little Guy would like some special attention.
So we saw them outside and we went down to try to negotiate the deal. I thought the person that was with her was her brother, but it turns out it is her husband. The lady was so excited that we were talking to her husband, I think she could lip read. Anyway he said no. I thought maybe he didn't understand me, so we got a higher level translator and it really was no.
He thinks his wife is stupid and can't be trusted to do anything. She is too dumb to watch his cart much less a kid. She can't speak or hear and she doesn't know English. We over and over explained that our son was deaf and that it was ok that she didn't speak and that we would be there the whole time and it was just one morning a week. It was so sad. I felt bad for her because he acted like he owned her. We were offering to pay her more than the University cleaning people make in a month to for just work 4 hours a week.
Oh, well. At least we offered her a chance. It was a glimpse of how a deaf person is treated in China. Perhaps he refused because he was worried we were going to hurt his wife or something, or maybe they don't have the id # and are afraid that if she works for us they will be scrutinized....who knows. We told him if they change their minds to let us know.
