Back to Fort Lauderdale, But Wait! There's More!

a travel blog by Jim Latt

On December 11, 2009 I head back to Lauderdale. Visiting with friends, special times and special dinners, and more. On December 13th I launch a big trip, to Asia. I'll be gone over a month, traveling to Hong Kong, Denpasar (Bali), Indonesia, then Bangkok, Thailand and possibly other stops along the way.
But the best part of the trip will be the 'travel bookends' which are stop-overs in San Francisco! There, I'll be visiting with Jeremy, my son, and his girlfriend Meg. They recently moved to San Fran and love it. But wait, there's more! On the first leg of the trip I'll be on a long layover in San Francisco, so Jeremy, Meg and I will dine at the Airport for dinner. And, coincidentally, Jeremy's mom-Pam will be visiting SO...we're all going to be together for a family dinner. I can't wait! We're all excited about this unique gathering. After dinner, I fly off the Hong Kong at midnight. My oh my!

One of my personal challenges on this trip is packing. Traveling over a month and with carry-on luggage only? That's right! I just got this really cool backpack online. It's a versatile backpack with a nice rack and waist belt. But it also has wheels for tooling around airports and streets. It's small enough to be carry-on. I'm taking a second, regular sized pack too along with my nifty new netbook. This will be the first time I've traveled over a week with so few items. Seasoned travelers advise to wash your clothes every day, and that will be my mantra!

Checking my "TO DO" list---- typhoid shot-check, up-to-date immunizations-check, malaria meds-check, iodine tablets to purify water-check, US Embassy phone numbers-check, light clothing/silk/poly/sweat-wicking-check, good sneakers-check, pepto-check, but wait! there's more!

The genesis of this trip was job-hunting. It's morphed into a little more though! Since I've already invested in getting to Asia for a job fair, I decided to expand the opportunity since living expenses will be relatively low.
What job? Well, this has been a long-held dream: to be the principal of an International School in an exotic part of the world. There are a number of opportunities, so I'm very hopeful. I've done a couple interviews stateside, via Skype and telephone. I'm looking forward to meeting some of my interviewers in person when I get to Bangkok. There will be over 90 schools represented at this job fair. And, in February, there's another international job fair in Boston, with over 130 schools participating world-wide. The group I'm working with is called International School Services (ISS). They are a great organization. I've been nothing but impressed with their 'reach' and professional services. The organization is populated with extremely friendly people with very interesting life-stories.

But wait! There's more!

"It's all about me!" This blog contains glimpses of my travels, adventures, and experiences. You won't find much about friends and families, relationships, and personal intrigue. (That stuff is for my novel...) Nope, this is purely self-serving and quite self-centered stuff. Postings will be...
