Back to Antigua

Resting up and making plans for the rest of the trip this weekend. Also need to shop for some more suitable clothes for working on the farm. Leaving for Campur on Monday, where the community does not have electricity so I'll be out of contact by internet until next weekend. Yesterday I...

Back to Antigua

Back to Antigua for a couple of days. Trek up nearby active volcano called Pacaya ... full details to come. P.S. I sincerely apologise to my loyal fans for the severe time lapse since my last post - this is now being remedied. And I would further like to apologise for the lack of photos...

First stop in Centroamerica

Arrived at the airport in Guatemala City then one hour later in Antigua, about 1 PM (Mountain time zone). It's a nice, colonial city with a volcano in the background and lots of language schools, but very touristic.

Antigua 2

So, some more observations. Butterflies ... abundant and incredibly beautiful here. There are some whose lemon yellow wings are so unnaturally vibrant that every time I see one I assume it is a bit of rubbish blowing around. Others are a Bright tangerine Orange, and some are patterned with...

Back to School

So, Antigua. As I write this I have been here for almost a week and a half and the place is beginning to feel, if not like home, at least comfortingly familiar. Your arrival in Antigua is impossible to overlook, as it is marked by an abrupt encounter with cobbled streets, which, combined...

Nerd Alert In Guatemala!

After an incredibly easy border crossing, our first experience of Guatemala was a terror inducing bus ride in which our gun-ho bus driver had a penchant for attempted overtakes on hairpin bends despite almost zero visibility. Whilst fearing for our lives Colly decided to enlighten us with some...

Volcanoes

The last two days were spent in Antigua. We were waiting for Carrie Ann to arrive so we could do some other exploring. I got a few good pics of volcanoes in the area at dusk. Agua was smoking as the sun was setting here.

Exploring the City

I slept in and woke up to roosters crowing and other calls of birds I did not recognize. After a little breakfast at a cafe near the plaza, I spent the rest of morning wandering around the city. The sun was hot and it was clear so good views of the volcanoes to the south and west: Agua, Fuego...

On my own

I arrived at night by myself as Dave, Dave and Jan had gotten stuck in Dallas after being delayed in Denver by the snowstorm. I was picked up by Jose, who didn't speak a word of English. I spoke enough to let him know that he could smoke in the car. He pointed out every Pollo Campero on the main...

Re: Have fun

Just a quick note to let you know that I made if to Guatemala ok. I managed to catch a bad cold before I left, and it has followed me here. I've just been resting the last couple days, and seem to be getting better. This is a great place to relax though. I'm in the town of Antigua, up in the...
