Welcome to India!

So, we are in India after leaving Thailand 1 week earlier than planned. India is a violent assault on all the senses, and all at once. There is alot of beauty and colors, but also alot of tragedy, there is smells lovely as incence, flowers, food and spices, and also smells that are less...

The madness of Mumbai

We stayed at the Hotel Volga in Mumbai but it soon became known as the Hotel Vulgar, all shabby and no chic. Mind you, the views out of the window certainly compensated for the cramped and overpriced room. We only had a couple of nights in Mumbai and that was plenty. We've been there...

Back to India

Stepping over the border (over a metal bar) between Nepal and India was pretty odd, and straight away could tell we were back in India with pushy jeep taxi drivers trying to get us into their jeep! Crammed 4 of us into the middle section so the 1 1/2 hour journey to Gorakhpur wasnt the most...

"Madam, Yes? Please Madam?"

I hear this phrase hundreds of times every day. It's usually accompanied by hands reaching out to pinch your arms or tug at your clothing. I've tried all sorts of responses: 1) Ignoring: this works pretty well but encourages people to keep asking you until you're out of earshot 2) Smiling...

Leaving Mumbai - Finally

Mumbai got the best of us in just 2 days. We can hardly walk upright, our lungs hurt from the smog our heads from the constant honking and our train leaves at 23:30. That is very tough as we have no hotel anymore so we have to hang out in cafes. At every place in Mumbai it is either extremly...

Landing in Mumbai

The flight was unusually pleasant not at least because we had a spare seat right next to us. Karin had to suffer for the last 30 minutes as the landing was accompanied by some turbulences or as the captain said: We are now over the Indian subcontinent and this usually means that we can have bad...

Back to city life

After saying goodbye to the beach paradise we got on a plane and headed for the Bollywood capital of Mumbai. Another nightmare getting from the airport. Once the taxi driver said he knew where we were staying, we got in the cab, he drove out of the airport, then asked where we were staying!!!...

Bollywood here we come!

Caught the plane from Delhi and arrived in Mumbai (Bombay) this afternoon. The most noticeable thing is the heat - it's 33 degrees and feels blimmen muggy. Finally some sun! It's a huge city - but definitely seems more orderly than Delhi. The streets are lined with Shacks and Shantytowns...
