A nice long walk

Dickey Flat, New Zealand

We awoke to nice weather so decided to go on a nice walk from our Doc site along the River to Karangahawke gorge. Our plan was to see how we felt and if up for it, take a longer harder walk back.

The walk was really nice following the River and through some tunnels made during the gold mining days. There was lots of interesting mining history and rail tracks which we followed through more tunnels.

At the gorge we stopped for a coffee and then headed back across the tougher route.

It was pretty much uphill for a good hour; the views being spectacular, then along and down for a while.

We reached a stream crossing that required a bit of boulder climbing, Chris went ahead and then waited to help me. As he did he managed to drop his sunglasses into the water. After I made it across he got a stick to try and fish them out, but in the process managed to slip on the rocks and land square on his arse and sliding down the rocks into the running water, ouch! After getting himself together he stripped off to his boxers and jumped in the water to finally get his sunnies back. After this long break the rest of the walk seemed very hard and we were pleased to see camp again. We had a good feed of Kedgeree using the rest of the smoked fish, plus plenty leftovers for lunch tomorrow.
