Go Fly a Kite

Harbin, China

Yesterday we took Princess and Little Guy to fly their kites. We had gotten free kites at Sun Island during May Holidays. It was a kite festival and they had lots of cool kites on display, but none for sale. Everybody got a free kite instead. The whole Sun Island thing was strange. We ended up going because my co-worker asked to take Teenager because his brother wanted to take her. He asked me and I said, "no, I know she doesn't want to go with your brother alone." How creepy, I didn't know this brother at all and what a wimp to not ask her directly. So shortly there after somebody in my department (a VIP) comes in the middle of one of my classes with the co-worker and says my whole family will now go to Sun Island and I should not be so closeminded to limit my daughter's opportunities. Basically they just didn't take no, so we were dragged to Sun Island. And it was so bizarre because the co-worker didn't come and neither did his brother, instead we were escorted by a bunch of women and middle school students. It was a strange elaborate plan for practicing English for the middle schoolers. Teenager was beyond angry so she refused to speak English at all and answered every question to her in Chinese. So it was an uncomfortable couple of hours before they gave up and took us to lunch and then home. But we got 4 free kites and saw that Sun Island is just a tourist trap and hardly worth a taxi ride back.
So we finally put the kites in the air. Little Guy must have been kite flying before. In fact he was a little miffed at our lack of professional equipment. We were unpacking the kites and he showed me that we had forgot to bring the thing that attaches to a belt that the Chinese guys use. He quickly got his in the air and Princess chased after him with hers on the ground. Eventually, they both were flying high. It was a fun afternoon.
Little Guy continues to not enjoy our cooking. He actually doesn't like the ayi's cooking either. Just his school cafeteria's. So today Chris bought a fresh chicken at the Muslim butchers, it came with feet. Teenager joked that her brother would probably like them. She was right. In fact he was just tickled because he got to eat both of them. The rest of the chicken went into the crock pot for yummy chicken soup. Little Guy didn't want to eat the chicken soup from our nice soup bowls, he didn't even want it set in front of him. I had the idea of getting out the stainless steel bowl like they use at school. We took him into the kitchen and scooped him some soup in the bowl from the crock pot. He took it back to his seat and proceeded to eat 3 bowls of soup. Presentation is everything!
